Practical guide
How to get topography for an architectural site study
Begin with the decision you need to make. An early massing conversation and a construction-level check require different evidence.
1. Define the question
Write down whether you need to understand landform, road relationships, general levels or the setting for a concept model. If you need certified boundaries or construction levels, obtain the relevant survey rather than treating an online model as a substitute.
2. Select enough surrounding context
Choose the project boundary and the surroundings needed to understand access and terrain. Avoid assuming that the smallest possible selection is always the most useful.
3. Generate and cross-check
Inspect the terrain model, read the contours in plan and compare a section. Look for gaps, abrupt changes and features that do not match other reliable information. Record uncertainties alongside the design study.
4. Confirm the handoff
Check the formats and limits offered by the application before export. In your receiving workflow, verify units, orientation and levels rather than assuming every setting transfers automatically.
